The Foundation...A Glimpse at Our Past
Part 3
Upon Paul Harris's death, there were to be no flowers sent or monuments erected in his honor. Instead, his only request was to donate money for the advancement of international understanding. The Rotary world knew that Paul Harris supported The Rotary Foundation since its inception.
As word of his death grew, donations began flooding into Rotary headquarters. The RI Board was currently promoting a fundraising campaign. They decided to change the name of the campaign to the Paul Harris Memorial Fund of The Rotary Foundation.
Within a few weeks, numerous clubs were reporting their members were contributing an average of $10 to the fund. By the end of 1948, $1.3 million had been donated. Arch Klumph, now 78, was an honorary pallbearer at Paul Harris’ funeral in Chicago. In the end, it was the death of Klumph’s dear friend that brought life to The Rotary Foundation. Klumph
would live long enough to see his beloved Foundation coffers overflowing with contributions from around the world.
