POLIO PLUS – ROTARY IN ACTION
Since 1985 Rotary has contributed over $1.2 billion and tens of thousands of volunteer hours to immunize over 2.5 billion children in 122 countries. Rotary’s advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by governments around the world to contribute to the cause.
There has been a 99.9% reduction in polio since the 1980’s when the world saw about 1,000 new cases a day. There are only two countries that have not stopped transmission of the wild poliovirus: Afghanistan and Pakistan. This remaining 1% is the most difficult to prevent due to geographical isolation, armed conflict and cultural barriers.
Rotary has a growing roster of celebrities and public figures who are participating in the “This Close” program. They serve as ambassadors to educate the public about polio through public service announcements and public appearances.
All Rotarians need to continue to give generously to PolioPlus, because we cannot lose ground on all the good that has been achieved so far. We are "This Close" to our goal!
